He’ll likely still be admired most for films like Alpha Dog and Like Crazy or, perhaps, for one of the additional unreleased films he’s already completed. Even if he’s his usual charming self and this winds up being the best Star Trek installment of all time, the role of Chekov is essentially a cog in an ensemble playing the ensign never quite allowed Yelchin to achieve his full dramatic potential. The same likely won’t be said for Yelchin’s performance in Star Trek Beyond. In fact, Hollywood history is full of brilliant and iconic performances in posthumously released films: Bruce Lee, Brandon Lee, Spencer Tracy, and James Dean all died before the public got to see their some of their best work in Enter the Dragon, The Crow, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, Rebel Without a Cause, and Giant. The film ended up being a massive hit-and, like Peter Finch (who died before the release of his most iconic film, Network), Ledger went on to earn a posthumous Oscar for his dark, chilling performance. Why would any actor not want that to beĪppreciated? I know he would have. For me, this is a celebration of what he didīest – entertain people. People ask me if I feel weird about theįilm and seeing it. I absolutely know without question that he would have He was a fantastic actor and he put everything And the entire Fast cast, including an emotionally devastated Diesel, publicly honored Walker at the MTV Movie Awards that aired shortly after Furious 7’s release. Throughout the Furious 7 publicity tour, Diesel dedicated the film to his co-star, even naming his new daughter Pauline-in honor of Paul-a week before the film opened. And somehow, the production-and its subsequent press tour-managed to do that without looking insensitive in the wake of Walker’s death. But the film didn’t just soldier forward, covering Walker’s absence with a combination of digital magic and help from his brothers-it went on to be a roaring success at the box office. The death, inextricably linked as it was to the movie’s signature car stunts, left a cloud hanging over the production of the unfinished Furious 7 some even wondered if the death of Walker might mean the death of the franchise. In November 2013, Fast and Furious franchise star Paul Walker died in a horrible car accident. The crew of Star Trek Beyond isn’t the first cast given the devastating task of promoting a splashy blockbuster that has just lost a star, though-and recent film history may have a thing or two to teach them about the best way to navigate a press tour while honoring the fallen. But there’s something looming over the fun-loving franchise: the shadow of actor Anton Yelchin’s tragic, early death. Its stars- Zoe Saldana, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and John Cho, among others-are already deep in the process of promoting the movie. In less than two weeks, Star Trek Beyond-the third installment in the rebooted sci-fi franchise-will premiere, right in the middle of summer blockbuster season.
